The event, which will hold on Saturday December 15, 2012, at the Agip Recital Hall of Muson Centre by 5.30pm, will feature seasoned performers competing for five community schools in Lagos State. These include: Adekemi Adetula a.k.a Irawo (Talking Drums), Guchi Egbunine (Tenor), Uduak Nsehe (Piano), Emmanuel Fagbohun (Violin), and Premier Clarinet Quartet. There will be special performances by Mr. Norman MacLeod (Chief Operating Officer, SINOPEC Ltd) who will be giving a performance on the Scottish Bagpipe and contributions by renowned performers Yinka Davies and Olufunmi. The event will be anchored by Ben Ogbeiwi and Omo Baba No. 1.

Lets Help Remi…

By Omotayo Obe

Ms. Remilekun Kode, a 43 year old mother of two and trader is appealing to the general public to help her raise the sum on N1, 500, 000 for the cost of surgery for a disorder called necrosis of her hip bone. Necrosis is the premature death of cells in living tissue; in Kode’s case the cells in her hip bone are dead thus causing her painful movement. At present, she uses crutches to ease her movement and to walk again, a surgery must be performed on both legs. The surgery itself will cost N500, 000 while the prostheses to be used on both hips will cost N1 million. The surgery is to be performed at the Orthopedic Hospital, Igbogbi, Lagos.

According to her, the condition started over 18 years ago after she got pregnant with her first baby and financial support has come from family and friends through the years. So much has been spent that the 1993 Computer Science graduate of the University of Lagos had to close down her shop, her only source of livelihood as her condition grew worse.

Dr. Femi Thompson, Project Director of Edensfield Health Foundation, (an NGO chaired by Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, Senior Pastor of Trinity House, Lagos, the NGO helping raise awareness for Kode’s condition) said the aim of the foundation is to “help people with medical challenges raise funds and rehabilitate them after surgery.” She pleaded with the public to help save Kode’s life and help the foundation as well. According to her, Kode’s case is one of the very many cases they have at present and help is needed urgently to save her life. Speaking on Kode’s case, she said “she needs a replacement of the femoral head on both hips. The surgery is a major one that will take about a year as both hips cannot be operated upon at the same time”. She added that the N1, 500, 000 being requested for is the baseline and more funds may be required depending on what happens at the surgery. She said Edensfield will also assist in raising funds but needs the help of the general public as well. Payment to save Kode’s life can be made through: GTBank Account: 0002103566 OR Access Bank Account: 0016318685 in favour of Edensfield Health Foundation. October 16 is World Food Day - Foodbank Nigeria: Closing the food gap

As nations all over the world work to address the critical issue of economic recovery and job losses, many community- based feeding assistance programmes continue to experience increasing pressure to provide food for those who now find themselves in the ‘hunger belt’ and who are not able to provide adequate food for themselves and their dependants. There is no doubt that there is an increasing number of people caught in this food gap, needing or relying on food assistance.

Feeding assistance programmes at community levels in Nigeria are usually coordinated by faith-based organizations, and social clubs. While some have been consistent, a lot of goodwill in food donation is shown at various times of the year by individuals or groups, especially at festive periods.  These programmes urgently need the support of a structured, coordinated and multichannel assistance platform, which engages all stakeholders (individuals, groups, and corporate citizenry) and supports the activities of such groups, ensuring availability of food through innovative partnerships, food drives and donations, training and outreaches that will ensure availability of food that meet all safety requirements, throughout the year.

Foodbank Nigeria is a non-profit, non-denominational organization that secures and distributes food donations to food programmes (called agencies) which feed the hungry. Foodbank Nigeria works as an aid clearing house, which coordinates and maximizes the distribution of donations through identified channels and food programmes. Working together with donors, supporters, partners, volunteers and staff, we are confronting hunger in Nigeria, and extending the budgets of agencies involved in feeding programmes. The impact of Foodbank programmes is estimated at stretching budgets of feeding programmes by up to 8 times of their original impact values.

Foodbank Nigeria initiative is part of the Global Food banking network, which is active in different capacities in at least 23 countries. Its mission is to effectively address identified food gaps in Nigeria through education, advocacy and empowerment strategies as part of new and existing feeding programmes. Foodbank Nigeria’s target capacity is to provide 5 million meals a day through at least 5,000 pre-assessed and registered nonprofit community food programmes (agencies) nationwide. We provide a viable and reputable platform for food assistance and support existing and new activities seeking to provide community-based support in this direction. We believe that, through activities of Foodbank Nigeria, the number of agencies (registered community food programmes) would expand considerably, helping us to achieve our daily meal target. The existence of a well-stocked and functional foodbank will also help to address emergency food needs associated with various types of disasters like the current flood situation in Kogi, Delta, Benue and Anambra states.

The organisation has adopted October as its Hunger Action Month, during which it has commenced a “close the food gap” campaign, that will introduce the public to its mission and call Nigerians to join the global movement through partnering, volunteering and donating to Foodbank Nigeria activities and programmes to address the food security issue in the country.

In a statement signed by its Project Manager, Paul Achem, Foodbank is convinced that Nigerians have what it takes to build a food assistance platform we can all be proud of. With good structure in place and the commitment of experienced foodbank administrators, employees, volunteers, and community members, the organisation can effectively close the food gap in Nigeria. The assurance is that all stakeholders can make a difference in the lives of the teeming hungry population of this country without their products and their identity being compromised.

Project Hope

A group of 30 young adults, all under the age of 26, gathered together and decided to embark on a project of relevance and lasting influence. This led to the renovation of a junior high school, Aje Comprehensive High School, located in the heart of Yaba, Lagos.

The school was constructed in 1979 by the Jakande government with the aim of providing free education to Nigerian children but it has since been neglected (never renovated) and the physical conditions under which the pupils are tutored has deteriorated to a dreadful state. Classes were under-furnished and overcrowded, the buildings and foundation were rapidly giving way, roofs were feeble and worn, and walls had huge holes and patches all over! Whenever it rained, the school compound was flooded and their writing materials got soaked as water dripped constantly through the roofs.

The team was of the opinion that the kids deserve at the very least a conductive learning environment that does not threaten their health and lives, whilst encouraging commitment and innovation by them and their teachers. ‘To fulfill our vision we decided to assist in the restoration of the class rooms by renovating an entire wing of six classes. We wanted to bring hope to both the students and their teachers, hence our project was code-named “Project Hope”, said the team lead.

The team swung into fund raising action and within a month was able to raise Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N2, 500,000.00). Donations were received from individuals and companies. The project which was done in five phases was completed within six weeks and commissioned with the Permanent Secretary in charge of the education district and other Lagos state Education department officials in attendance.

Today, Aje Comprehensive High School is transformed into a learning center that has put hope and satisfaction in the lives of the teachers and students. Mission accomplished.

Using the Media to do Good

A 1997 New York Times piece on how impoverished Asian children were dying from filthy water was one of the things that made Bill Gates start the Gates Foundation, the largest philanthropic organisation in the world.

Stories of a child dying from pneumonia, tales of AIDS victims and substandard schools and children dying from malaria are inherently dark and depressing. These are not necessarily the most popular stories that sell newspapers/magazines or attract large numbers of viewers.

Yet, getting those stories out is something the media can be hugely helpful with and can change the world one step at a time.

Timeless is committed to this...why don't you join us?

A Timeless Editorial: Obama’s queer Golden Rule invocation: Sign of things to come?

Barack Obama has gone down in history (or, as some say, in infamy) as the first sitting US President to endorse same-sex “marriage”. But he wasn't always amenable to it.

It is on record that while running for the Illinois state senate in 1996, Mr Obama responded to a questionnaire making it clear he favoured legalizing homosexual “marriage”, stating that he “would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.” In 2004, he said he opposed homosexual “marriage,” based on his faith, and didn’t consider it a civil right.

For the record, homosexuals have the same rights of citizenship as the rest of us. What they want is the special right to redefine a foundational institution. But putting that aside, sources reported that Obama’s stance changed again (when in fact it hadn’t). Some politicians will say anything for a vote, and Obama falls into that category.

On May 8, 2012, 61 percent of voters in North Carolina (Billy Graham’s state of domicile) chose to amend the state constitution to keep the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman. After Vice President Joseph Biden publicly stated that he was “comfortable” with homosexual “marriage,” and Amendment One won at the polls, Obama supposedly was under pressure to make a public statement.

An excerpt from his groundbreaking flip-flop-flip on the subject: “This is something that, you know, we’ve talked about over the years and [Michelle], you know, she feels the same way, she feels the same way that I do. And that is that, in the end the values that I care most deeply about and she cares most deeply about is how we treat other people and, you know, I, you know, we are both practicing Christians and obviously this position may be considered to put us at odds with the views of others but, you know, when we think about our faith, the thing at root that we think about is, not only Christ sacrificing himself on our behalf, but it’s also the Golden Rule, you know, treat others the way you would want to be treated.”

Forget being “at odds with the views of others” for a moment, Mr. President, and focus on what God has said about marriage and homosexuality. If he’s a Christian as claimed, he’d stay with the fact that God instituted this union between a man and a woman, who become one flesh; it’s no mere trifle.

It is part of His divine, created order, and homosexual “marriage” is outside that order. The Apostle Paul calls homosexuality unnatural and shameful, and those who commit the acts bear the punishment. Why punishment? Because homosexuality is a sin -- like myriad other missing-the-mark acts – but only worse because those caught up in it flaunt it and systematically bully the bulk of the populace to accept the abnormal behaviour as normative.

How does Obama, “correctly handling the word of truth” of the whole of Scripture, find support for his politically-correct latest stance?

Obama conveniently ignores the context of the Golden Rule. In His Sermon on the Mount, Christ gives us an exposition of the law and a call to faith and repentance (i.e. change your mind and turn away) from sin. The concept of the “rule” goes back to before Christ and means we ought to treat others the way we’d want to be treated. It doesn’t mean that because heterosexuals can marry, we should redefine the word and upend the institution so that two men can call themselves “married.”

With an eye toward the presidential election, Obama, who claims he’s a Christian, invoked Scripture -- which he is on record to have mocked as insufficient and irrelevant to modern realities -- to support that which the Bible clearly condemns.

The question is moot to ask of Mr Obama: does the “Golden Rule” require us to change the definition of marriage to mandate legalized “marriage equality” (or “civil Union equality” for that matter) for bi-sexuals? How about polygamists (and those whose preference is polyandry) and other -- consenting adult -- multiple partner “marriages”? How about same-sex sibling or adult same-sex parent-child unions? If they want it, does the “Golden Rule” mean we must give it to them?

Against all such there can be no objection, going by Mr Obama's logic, once those ones are able to build up to threshold level the groundswell of support required, through unrelenting agitations as did the same-sex crowd, to demand that they also deserve to be extended such "rights".

As he seeks to justify his position on same-sex marriage and other issues that are either questionable at best or deny Scripture at worst, President Obama might be said to be preaching another gospel. This could possibly lead to a fissure in his solid support among African-Americans, costing the president votes in November. It will also likely galvanize the culture warriors. Minorities mostly vote for Democrats, but they don’t like their faith denied. That could cause some of them to stay home on Election Day, or even vote for Mitt Romney.

The negative reaction the president received from some of the African-American ministers he called shortly after declaring his support for same-sex marriage could serve as a sign of things to come.

SAMI holds Benefit Concert in support of Sickle Cell

As part of its going efforts to impact the lives of those suffering with sickle cell anaemia and to raise funds for planned projects, an NGO, the Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) will be having a benefit concert tagged TOUCH A CELL on Sunday, April 1 at the Victoria Crown Plaza Hotel, Ajose Adeogun Street, Victoria Island by 5pm. It will be an evening of dinner, music, dance, comedy and drama. Performances will include Oba, Adol, Kayefi, Olufunmi, Yinka Davies, Tosin Martins, Da Soul Explorers amongst others. Tickets are on sale from N5,000 for regular, N20,000 for VIP and N30,000 for couples. SAMI’s mission is to be an effective change agent in the lives of people living with Sickle Cell Anaemia as well as their families.

SAMI, initially called the Still Standing Foundation was inaugurated in November 2006 and was borne out of the intense response from the book “Still Standing, a biography of the founder of the foundation, Ms. Toyin Adesola. The book is a compelling autobiographical story of her travails with the sickle cell anaemia disorder and the tenacity by which she was able to overcome the many challenges she encountered. The book is one of faith, resilience and courage and challenges the reader to look beyond their immediate circumstances.

Sickle Cell disorder affects over 2 million Nigerians, resulting in the death of an average of 150,000 children each year, more out of ignorance than the disorder itself. As a result, a great deal needs to be done; not just from the physical treatment of the disease, but also the emotional and psychological aspects. This is the area SAMI intends to focus on to assist sicklers as well as people in general who are facing emotional and psychological challenges.

Sickle-Cell Anaemia also known as sickle-cell disease is a hereditary condition in which haemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein in the blood, is altered, leading to periodic interruptions in blood circulation. The disease is found predominantly in blacks; it also occurs in the Middle East and the Mediterranean area.

Symptoms of the condition appear at about six months of age and may include enlargement of the abdomen and heart and painful swelling of the hands and feet. In adolescence, sexual maturation may be delayed. The disturbances in blood flow associated with the disease also dispose affected people to infections and leg ulcers. These symptoms are due to the altered haemoglobin, which changes shape when the amount of oxygen in the blood is reduced for any reason. The red blood cell in which the haemoglobin is contained also changes its shape, from round to crescent (sickle shaped). The sickle-shaped red cells interfere with normal blood flow by plugging up small blood vessels leading to painful crises.

Sickle-cell anaemia occurs when an individual inherits a sickle-cell gene from each parent. Programmes have been initiated to detect carriers of the gene, who do not themselves show the trait. Such carriers are informed that a child resulting from the union of two carriers runs a one-in-four risk of having sickle-cell disease. Therapy for sickle-cell anaemia is largely to allay symptoms.

Due to the phenomenal success of the inaugural ARISE Magazine Fashion Week 2011, where 5,000 guests, 51 designers, 81 models, 5 musical acts performed over three days – ARISE is once again proud to announce that it will return to Lagos in March 2012.

Once again, ARISE will invite 50 designers to participate in its 2012 Fashion Week show. The much anticipated finale will host the spectacular ARISE Magazine Fashion Awards. The very best of the designers will be invited to participate in the annual ARISE Magazine Fashion Gala at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week in September 2012.

At last yearʼs AMFW 2011 fashion event SEVEN designers: Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi, Jewel by Lisa, Asibelua, Bunmi Koko, Tsemaye Binitie, Pierre-Antoine Vettorello and KlûK CGDT were given a golden ticket invitation to showcase their designs in September 2011, as part of the Made in Africa by ARISE Magazine Collective at the Avery Fisher Hall, New York.

Beyond the Fuel Subsidy: Conversations the Government and the NLC should be having

By Ayodeji Jeremiah

(1) Despite strong economic growths in the past 5 years, our government is broke because there is extreme wastage on recurrent expenditure. Our government is too big and extremely expensive to maintain. Our National Assembly consumes a huge amount of our budget. The president, governors and local government chairmen and their assistants all have expenses that can be curtailed to bring down the cost of government but we don't see this happening. Why?

(2) Nigerians have to come to a realisation that for our government to work, it's time to do away with federal character and ethnic representation. A situation where we constitute a board and insist on having six commissioners on that board representing the six geo-political zones when that board can work effectively with two or three commissioners is unacceptable. Having a federal government with 36 or 42 ministers is unacceptable.

(3) Why is government so unwilling to repair the existing refineries? Each refinery can be repaired within 12 months while a new one can only be built within three years. If the government says there is no money to repair the refineries, how about borrowing money from the World Bank or ADB at reduced rates to do so? If those refineries work, supply will improve and people will be more than willing to allow subsidy removal to pay back such loans. At least, we will know what the government used the money for.

(4) Our Civil Service is bloated, disorganised and non-functional, yet majority of Nigerians continue to subsidise the salaries and financial inefficiencies in this sector. The NLC will not address this situation because it is not politically correct for them to do so. Fighting for N18, 500 minimum wage for less than 5 million Nigerians when majority of Nigerians are in the informal sector working in companies with less than 50 staff where the minimum wage law does not apply to them is not the way for the NLC to go. NLC should be looking at how to engage the government on how to free up resources for the informal sector, how to build new infrastructure and how to sustain our moribund manufacturing industries.

(5) If government is sincere about removal of fuel subsidy, they should give a timeline. E.g.
- Repair of existing refineries - January 2012 - December 2013
- Improvement of Power Supply to at least 10, 000 megawatts – January 2012 - December 2012
- Reduction of staff, salaries and expenditure in the Civil Service including both political and non-political office holders – January 2012 - December 2012
- Provision of Mass Transit Schemes - January 2012 - December 2012
- Repair of Railway - January 2012 - December 2013

The monies for the above can come from savings made in (iii) above and from public-private sector partnerships and from soft loans. Rather than collecting loans and mounting up debts to maintain an expensive bureaucracy and government, such loans and debts should be used to build new infrastructure

(6) There will be no 'cabal', no subsidy and corruption will be eliminated in the fuel supply chain if our refineries can work and fuel supply is improved.

(7) The fuel subsidy issue is not just economic and that is where the government got it all wrong. Anyone with A-Level Economics knows this subsidy cannot be maintained but the argument is also moral and political. Nigerians simply do not trust their government to spend the money realised from the subsidy removal wisely. Government should have come out with a detailed expense statement saying this is how and how the money will be spent with derivables clearly stated and dated.

The subsidy is the only thing Nigerians generally see as their gain from the government, removing it arbitrarily was wrong and then the government's damage control activities has been less than satisfactory. The House of Representatives, while they should be commended for their special session convened on Sunday January 8 should also be made to sit up. There are lots of other burning issues that we need their attention on. Playing on our emotions and sentiments should not be allowed, they are also culpable in the issues pertaining to our country. I did not see any statement from them slashing their salaries and bloated allowances.

If the NLC wants to go on strike, then it should not just focus on getting us back to N65 per litre of petrol. If at the end of the day, negotiations take place and we start buying fuel at N80 or N100 or N120 per litre, then nothing has been achieved.
