A
1997 New York Times piece on how impoverished Asian children were dying from
filthy water was one of the things that made Bill Gates start the Gates
Foundation, the largest philanthropic organisation in the world.
Stories
of a child dying from pneumonia, tales of AIDS victims and substandard schools
and children dying from malaria are inherently dark and depressing. These are
not necessarily the most popular stories that sell newspapers/magazines or
attract large numbers of viewers.
Yet,
getting those stories out is something the media can be hugely helpful with and
can change the world one step at a time.
